1st Symposium on Artemisia
a One Health plant.
Exploring uses in Human, Animal, and Environmental Health
Dear Artemisia Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that the 1st International Symposium on Artemisia will take place from 8 to 10 October 2025, in Arusha, Tanzania.
For the first time, experts from all over the world are invited to share their knowledge with their peers.
The Symposium will give the floor to doctors, biologists, veterinarians, agronomists, horticulturists etc., while leaving room for demos and visits to the 4,000 acres of land dedicated by the Aga Khan University to horticultural research.
For three extraordinary days, let's build a scientific community around a plant that benefits human, animal and environmental health.

Artemisia,
a One Health plant
Artemisia is a remarkable example of the One Health concept, which recognizes the interdependence of human, animal and environmental health.
Its use in human health extends beyond malaria, with ongoing research exploring its benefits in the treatment of diseases such as cancer, schistosomiasis, tuberculosis, and Alzheimer's disease. It is also being studied for osteoporosis, asthma, and toxoplasmosis.
In veterinary medicine, Artemisia has been shown to reduce parasitic infections in livestock, while its natural pest repellent properties make it a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides in agriculture.
With hundreds of scientific publications, Artemisia embodies the essence of One Health, a holistic approach that benefits people, animals and ecosystems alike.
From all over the globe, with one passion in common, one objective, one vision.
Physicians, biologists, veterinarians, agronomists, pharmacists, horticulturists,...

ACER Center: a Global Hub for Artemisia
The Arusha Climate and Environmental Research (ACER) Center is set to become the world’s reference point for Artemisia research.
With expertise in agriculture and scientific research, and extensive land dedicated to Artemisia, ACER leads innovation in its applications for human health, animal health, and as a biopesticide and biorepellent.
It has excellent scientific credentials as part of the Aga Khan University.
Located in a region with diverse ecosystems and volcanic soils, ACER offers ideal conditions for field experiments and agricultural trials. It provides researchers and students with the infrastructure to conduct real-world studies and develop One Health solutions, while also serving as a training hub for future leaders in Artemisia research.
Strategically situated near Kilimanjaro International Airport, ACER combines accessibility with a vision to drive global collaboration on Artemisia’s sustainable applications.
Northern Tanzania offers a rich cultural and natural backdrop
Located in the heart of northern Tanzania, Arusha is an excellent gateway for exploring some of Africa’s most iconic natural wonders. Known as the "safari capital" of Tanzania, it is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater.
Whether you’re looking to experience the Great Migration in the Serengeti or trek the world-famous Kilimanjaro, Arusha offers unparalleled access to these destinations.
